The United Nations Security Council has adopted a US-led resolution calling for all member states to refrain from nuclear explosive tests.
The council approved the draft resolution to this effect in a majority vote at a meeting on Friday morning.
The administration of President Barack Obama submitted the draft earlier this month in time for the opening of the UN General Assembly. More than 30 countries, including Japan, co-sponsored the draft.
Obama seeks to help bring into force the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, known as CTBT, to help realize a world without nuclear weapons.
The CTBT was adopted at the UN General Assembly in 1996, but has yet to take effect.
